Art Kibbutz Public Programs on Governor's Island
May 26 - September 10, 2015
Art Kibbutz hosted numerous FREE activities at one of New York City's cultural hotspots just a few minute ferry ride from Manhattan and Brooklyn. On an average Sunday 7,000+ visitors spend the day on the island. Several outstanding summer programs take place on Governor’s Island including Figment Festival, River to River Festival, Governor’s Island Art Fair, New York Poetry Festival - many of which Art Kibbutz is a participant. Our neighbors include outstanding cultural organizations such as the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Martha Graham Dance Company, Brooklyn Artery. Art Kibbutz is the only Jewish program on Governor's Island.
For 16 summer Sundays Art Kibbutz opened its doors to show art-work-in-progress, featuring performances, readings, workshop, artist talks, Jewish learning opportunities - every week a different FREE event. Some weekends were even more special than others:
NEW YORK POETRY FESTIVAL
Poetry and fiction reading on Tisha B'Av July 26th with Patricia Eszter Margit, Willa Schneberg, Liz Savage - and others. The 5th Annual New York City Poetry Festival will be held on Governors Island's Colonel's Row on July 25th and 26th, 2015. The Poetry Society of New York, producers of The Poetry Brothel, The Typewriter Project, and the Ear Inn Series, once again invite attendees to come together for this free two-day festival to celebrate New York City's vibrant poetry community. The event includes over 50 poetry organizations and 250 poets on its three main stages; a Vendor's Village where local booksellers, artists and craft makers sell their wares; healthy and delicious food options including Morris Grilled Cheese, Big D's Grub Truck, and Mud Coffee; a beer garden sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery, poetry-inspired installation art throughout; the Ring of Daisies open mic; and, of course, the Children's Festival at NYCPF, sponsored by Writopia Lab!
Shmita ArtFest on August 9th was a huge success that we couldn't have reached without our outstanding partner organizations, including Hazon, Romemu, Jews Against Hydrofracking and Lab/Shul - also Schusterman Foundation's ROI Network and COJECO supported the event. More than 500 people came together to enjoy open studios, lectures, workshops and picnic on Governor's Island. MORE
SHPIEL PERFORMING IDENTITY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP
David Chack hosted a 1-day-long workshop for theatre and/or performance artists looking for a unique and safe incubator to explore their cultural, gender, and spiritual identities in order to access & develop extraordinary performance. Participants learned to utilize the body; memory and dream work; generative exercises, collaborative creation, and identity and spiritual journeys -- culminating with a work-in-progress piece, time permitting, for colleagues and friends.
On June 7th Art Kibbutz brought Jewish art that creates community to Governor's Island. At mini-residency Art Kibbutz provided an opportunity to work together in community and included the general public in the project. We brought the Na Nach Van from Monsey with fun, Chassidic spirit to party at this Burning Man after party/community art event. Performers included Blanket StatementStein and ShinShinMem spread simcha and made homies dance.
