Residencies

Picture
Our first residency program is coming up - applications now open!
Art Kibbutz NYC plans to provide living and work space, the 2-8 weeks long residencies are specifically created to harness and maximize residents' creative work. The artist colony will be conveniently located near New York City, where artists can connect and network to New York City’s vibrant to vibrant cultural and Jewish life. Please sign up to participate or host the program.

An inspiring and peaceful space to create
At the core of Art Kibbutz NYC is the belief that providing a physical space for artistic creation is the most crucial: time, space, quiet, comfort, discipline, community, learning, and commitment.  Besides a private bedroom and regular meals, each artist will be provided with an assigned studio. Studios will be created with the artists’ needs in mind. During the day artists could work free of the constraints of the art world and existential stress. Art Kibbutz NYC balances concentrated, productive work time with the stimulation of cultural exchange and communal events.

A HUB of like-minded artists
10-15 artists in residence each time would share their work, ideas and experiences with each other in the evenings in a relaxed, comfortable and informal setting. The programming would include daily discussions, events, and Jewish learning with outstanding guest lecturers and in-house scholars leading an artist beit midrash. Artists would have opportunities to volunteer, engage in community gardening (space permitting), and create joint artistic collaborations.

Like the most important artist colonies, such as Yaddo or MacDowell Colony, at Art Kibbutz NYC artists would be working professionally and would be admitted based on artistic excellence and interest in exploring the Jewish communal experience. Artists could come for 2-8 weeks with a commitment to work, and be part of a creative, intentional Jewish community.

The Colony would be an open, pluralistic, but not necessarily religious environment that is infused with Jewish values and resources, including a library. The Colony will provide Shabbat-friendly accommodations as well as healthy and nutritious kosher communal meals for breakfast and dinner with vegetarian options.

Access to the vibrancy of NYC’s Jewish and artist communities
Art Kibbutz NY will be strategically located with access to New York City, providing residents with opportunities connect to one of the world's largest international art markets.  Access to networking and presenting opportunities will allow residents to develop relationships with a broad audience, as well as the colony's community of international fellow residents. Opportunities form deeper relationships are available through facilitate involvement with supporting local community partnership organizations through the arts.

Personal connection to Jewish identity
Engaging artists in dialogue and pluralistic learning opportunities about a broader range of topics (such as Jewish culture, spirituality, social justice, environment, human rights, philosophy) to enrich the artists personally as well as the community itself.

Supporting the facilities

Art Kibbutz NYC is looking for a home. A gift of outstanding generosity, a real estate donation is key for Art Kibbutz NYC's success on the long run. The creative process that the colony nurtures is deeply rooted in, and depends entirely on, a physical place. We are seeking a spacious mansion, an inn, a former factory or a camp (optimally with 15+ guest rooms and/or studio space) as a permanent residence, mid-term (1 year) or short term usage (3-5 weeks). We are looking for locations in New York City and/or max. 1.5 hours away from the city in upstate New York (especially Westchester, Catskills and Putnam), Connecticut, Long Island with good transportation.
