Upcoming Artist Residency

Art Kibbutz Catskills
June 25 - July 6, 2018

Art Kibbutz – the International Jewish Artist Residency – proudly announces a special two week residency program at The Outlier Inn farm in Woodridge, NY for summer 2018. For this program artists may select any topic, while engaging in periodic group discussions encompassing aspects of Jewish tradition and social ethics. We aim to build community, develop common ground, and increase the reach and influence of our art, empowered by our engagement with Jewish culture, history, and spirituality. Applications are welcome regardless of individual identity as Jews or non-Jews.

Applicants selected to the Hamptons residency will have priority. Ongoing until spots filled.

Art Kibbutz supports artists working on their own projects, as well as collaborations with other artists or linked to other communities. Artists are expected to remain for the full duration of the residency.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Art Kibbutz’s Summer Institute in the Catskills will take place at The Outlier Inn, a bucolic 12-acre property in New York state’s southern Catskill mountains, 90 miles from NYC.  The Inn offers a peaceful and inspiring respite from life in the Big City.  It is a retreat center, an event/workshop/location space, a sustainable fiber and organic vegetable farm, and a world-class recording studio.
RECORDING STUDIO: At an additional cost (inquire from our office) we offer a retreat recording and mixing facility where time, space and inspiration are the most valuable pieces of gear.  Artists have 24 hour access to the studios and can focus on their music undisturbed while residing footsteps away.  Why make your record in the hectic city when you can make it in the beautiful country? There are two studios available for rent on a short or long-term basis.  Studio A features a Wes Lachot designed control room equipped with a Neve VR72 console and ATC 110 main monitors, a naturally lit 750 square foot live room, and 4 isolation booths.  Studio B features a 24 channel Sound Workshop 1280b console, a wide array of vintage analog synthesizers and a large isolation booth.  Studios A and B are interconnected via tie lines and a LAN network, and share a backline and mic locker depending on availability. A 30-foot geodesic dome is wired up as our chamber and is also available as a live recording space.
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: We will house residents at The Outlier Inn's fabulous Guest House: private or shared rooms are available with shared non-kosher and shared kosher kitchen and shared bathrooms. We are staying at an all year-round two family house with private entrances for each domicile. The downstairs consists of 3 bedrooms (1 Full, 1 Queen, 2 Fulls), 1.5 bathrooms, living room, full kitchen, and private covered front porch. The Upstairs unit consists of one bedroom (Queen) and an open-plan loft with 3 additional beds (1 Queen, 1 Full, 1 Twin), 1 bathroom and a full kitchen. There is a large deck which is shared by all Guest House guests.

ADDITIONAL ON THE PREMISES: There are live animals (goats and chickens), garden, geodesic dome, recording studio on the premises. Across the property is a 4.5 mile path ideal for strolling, running, and biking.

Property also has a pond, with a lake across the street. We also offer a communal hot tub shared by all property guests. No chemicals are used in the tub. Seasonal organic garden with produce available for sale to guests. There is a charcoal grill and utensils available as well as a grate for cooking directly over the open fire. Outdoor showers and kitchens for those who want to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

The barn houses the farm's Alpaca, Angora goats, Merino sheep and Oberhasli dairy goats as well as free-range chickens. We encourage guests to spend time with the animals, all of whom are friendly and sociable.  The farm shop features house-made blend yarn, winter accessories by www.stateofarc.com, a selection of vintage clothing, and a wide-variety of local products. The shop also features “local” records made here in the recording studio and available for purchase.

ADDITIONAL HOUSING: If you'd like to come up just for a few days or bring a friend or family members, we'll give you a discount to the airbnb operating on the property.
RESIDENCY STUDIO SPACE: Each resident is provided shared studio space (indoor or outdoors at a tent) based on need. The Dome is available for performing artists and writers.

Please note:
  1. There are no special shared facilities such as a woodshop or media lab
  2. Tools: Artists must provide their own tools; some restrictions apply

TRANSPORTATION: Woodridge is located 86 miles from New York City and is easily accessible by car, bus and train.

Cancelled: Art Kibbutz Summer Institute in the Hamptons
June 26 - July 10, 2018
East Hampton, NY

Due to administrative and staff transitions at the Hamptons Synagogue, we were informed that the synagogue would not be able to host our artists residency. This information came to us this week and took us by surprise. Still, as we have an impressive pool of applicants and numerous offers of alternative locations, we have every intention of hosting our summer residency and are currently seeking a new location.
